What the movie “The Notebook” left out about intimacy

When I first got married, I thought intimacy was all about kissing, holding hands and connecting in the bedroom. I thought I knew what it meant to be truly close to someone. And for a while, it worked. But then, life happened—kids, bills, endless to-do lists—and suddenly, what felt like intimacy turned into a confusing dance of passion, frustration, and arguments. Yet, I held on, convinced that this was still intimacy. Sure, there was pain, but there was passion too, right?

I was captivated by movies like The Notebook—the heated arguments, the passionate reconciliations. That was what love looked like, or so I thought. I saw it in movies, in my upbringing, in the relationships all around me. It seemed normal. But here’s the thing: what I didn’t see, not in the movies and definitely not in the everyday life around me, were couples being tender, kind, and respectful to each other. People complained about their partners, belittled them, and treated them poorly in public. They were married but resentful, they yelled and screamed, then made up like it was all a part of the game. That cycle felt normal to me too. So, as long as we still had a sex life, I thought we were fine.

I remember a TV advertisement I saw as a kid. It was about domestic violence. There was a man with “LOVE” tattooed across his hand. He was strong, and despite beating his wife, he claimed he loved her because that’s what he thought love was. I remember thinking, “What rubbish!” Of course love doesn’t look like that. Of course, love isn’t throwing a punch.

But years later, after learning the Six Intimacy Skills™, I had a realisation that shook me to my core: I was more like that man than I ever wanted to admit. He believed love and abuse could coexist. And I believed that a marriage full of love could also be full of disrespect. That epiphany hit me like a lightning bolt. There was another way. I had been wrong all along about what true intimacy was.

True intimacy isn’t just sex or holding hands during the good times. It’s not about that fleeting passion that flares up after a fight. Real intimacy means listening, truly listening, even when you disagree. It’s creating so much emotional safety that your husband shares his innermost thoughts with you, knowing you will honour them. It’s the way he looks at you from across a crowded room, the way his eyes soften with love when no one else is looking. It’s those cheeky glances that make you feel like the only woman in the world.

Intimacy is about being able to open yourself up in ways that once felt far too vulnerable. It’s about receiving graciously all he has to offer and letting go of the armour you used to wear. It’s about showing him love and respect, and in return, feeling cherished, adored, flaws and all. This is the kind of intimacy we all deserve.

When I discovered what respect truly meant to a man, and committed myself to embodying it, a whole new world opened up—a world of deep, lasting intimacy that I never thought possible. And I want every woman to experience this. I want you to know what it feels like to be cherished and adored for exactly who you are. It’s not just a dream—it’s your birth right.
