Trust builds connection

How Trust Builds Intimacy in Relationships

When Caring Becomes Control

As women, we’re natural caregivers.

From the moment we hold our babies in our arms, nurturing usually becomes second nature. We feed them, clothe them, soothe their cries because they literally can’t do these things for themselves. And it’s beautiful. Caring in this way is not only instinctive, it’s necessary.

But what happens when they grow up?
When our kids become capable, even if they do things differently than we would, our role begins to shift. They don’t need our help the same way anymore. What they need is our trust.

And this is where it gets tricky.

Because trust means letting go.
It means handing over the reins, even when we want to step in.
It means believing they can figure it out, even if they stumble a little.

And while we don’t always get that balance right (who does?) the magic of a healthy parent-child relationship lies in that dance between nurturing and trusting.

Now, let’s talk about how this dynamic plays out in marriage…

When We Nurture Our Partners Too Much

That same instinct to care can spill over into our romantic relationships.
We tidy up after them, remind them of appointments, correct how they load the dishwasher. We take on more of the load, often out of love, sometimes out of habit and we tell ourselves we’re just being helpful.

But here’s the thing:
What feels like help to us can feel like mistrust to them.

And for many men, that message lands hard.
It doesn’t feel like love. It feels like control.

The Difference Between Nurturing and Trusting

Caring is beautiful. But it’s most powerful when it’s paired with trust.

Nurturing says: “I want to help because I care.”
Trust says: “I care enough to believe you can handle this your own way.”

In parenting, we gradually learn to shift from doing things for our children to letting them do things on their own. That transition, from nurturing to trusting, is essential for their growth.

But in marriage, it’s easy to fall back into the caring role. We assume that helping, managing, and stepping in will bring us closer. But often, what our partner really craves is trust, not to be parented, but to be believed in.

When Trust Doesn’t Come Naturally, But Connection Is What You Crave

Sometimes we don’t trust when we could, like when our partner has already shown they’re capable, but we still step in out of habit or fear it won’t get done “right.”

It’s not that we’re trying to control. Most of the time, we’re simply doing our best with the skills we have, trying to keep the peace, keep the wheels turning, or keep things from falling apart.

But there’s a quiet cost to constantly stepping in:
We send the message “I don’t think you can handle this.”
And that message chips away at connection, even when it’s not what we meant at all.

The good news?

We Can Learn to do it Differently

Here are three simple shifts that gently move us from over-caring to deep trust, the kind that invites more partnership, ease, and intimacy.

  1. Pause before stepping in.
Ask yourself: Is this something they can handle?
If the answer is yes, let them. Let the moment unfold without you managing it.
  2. Let the dishwasher stay loaded “wrong.”
Trust isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.
Sometimes the most intimate thing we can do is let go of how we think it should be done.
  3. Celebrate the wins – even the small ones.
The more we reflect trust back to others, the more we invite them to rise. Everyone thrives when they feel believed in.
