Imagine feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, especially when you’re trying to navigate the tricky terrain of raising teenage children. It’s like being caught in a whirlwind of questions: What’s the right balance between control and freedom? How do you guide them without suffocating their spirit? And when they hit that tender age where they seem to have a mind of their own, how do you keep the connection strong?
Teamwork, right? Like a pair of united parents can solve anything? Well, I didn’t have that.
I felt like I was managing it on my own. My husband didn’t seem as concerned as I was. He didn’t offer any solutions or advice. There were times when I wondered if parenting might be smoother for couples who shared more aligned values. Could my life have been easier if I had picked a different man? If you’ve ever felt this way, know that your feelings are valid and you’re not alone.
For me, these teenage challenges were exhausting. Power struggles with my son left me feeling drained and disconnected. While trying to untangle the mess I found myself in, I spent endless hours reading and pondering solutions. Nothing seemed to lift the cloud of sadness and frustration that hung over me. I felt like I was failing as a mum, like nothing I did was working.
I instinctively parented with an authoritative tone and high expectations. But my intuition and my son’s evident unhappiness told me something had to change.
Consequences became hard as I discovered how detrimental unrelated ones were. Instead of jumping into bed at the end of the day with a light, fun, and peaceful energy, it was quite the opposite. My husband could really feel my anxiety, stress, and worry. However, he didn’t seem capable of helping me. All of a sudden, I found myself resenting his lack of concern and the fact that he was leaving me with the parenting burden to manage on my own.
During a coaching session on the 6 Intimacy Skills™, I heard something that really stuck with me: “What we resist, persists.” For the first time, I considered the idea that the key wasn’t to control but to release. What if resisting my son’s desires was only making them stronger? I took a leap of faith and decided to try a different way. My focus shifted towards forming a strong connection. Deep down I knew I couldn’t grow that safety when I was in a power struggle with him. So I decided to let go.
When my son came to me asking for something that felt like a stretch, I affirmed the positive and told him I trusted him. His response brought tears to my eyes, “Thank you, Mum, I won’t let you down!” From that moment, I could see him truly empowered by authentic trust. It was a leap of faith, but one that paid off. He proved himself responsible and capable time and time again.
What I have experienced in this journey, beyond peace, trust, and connection with my son, is a growing respect for my husband’s thoughts and ideas. When I felt alone in parenting, it was because his way wasn’t my way. This inflexibility kept me from receiving any of his help. No wonder I felt isolated. Relinquishing control, by realising I am not always right, allowed me to lean on my husband’s ideas. As a result, I have felt a connection growing in my relationship with him. We are the most amazing team. He can sense the absolute respect and openness I have towards him and his ideas. I am grateful for this new found intimacy and that we are in this parenting gig together.
