I was exhausted. The responsibility of shaping our future was overwhelming and I felt unsupported by my husband.
From the beginning, I prided myself on being a go-getter, someone who always got what she wanted. My wedding day echoed my sister’s words, “She always gets what she wants.” I relished in that comment, not realising the toll it would take on my relationships. I was consumed by the illusion of control, always searching for the perfect home on my property app and orchestrating every decision in our lives.
However, as the responsibilities piled up, I found myself feeling increasingly exhausted and resentful.
Why wasn’t my husband taking a more active role in our decisions? I questioned his apathy, feeling burdened by the weight of responsibility and frustrated by the lack of shared initiative.
It was during this challenging time that I stumbled upon the concept of The Six Intimacy Skills™. These skills, centred around making conscious choices and fostering a deeper connection, became the guiding light in my journey.
I consciously chose where to invest my energy, relinquishing the need to own every decision in our household. Surprisingly, my husband began to step up, taking the lead in areas where I had once dominated. What’s more, his approach often led to outcomes that surpassed my expectations.
Using driving as a metaphor for the dynamic in our relationship, “My way was the highway”. Not only was this mindset detrimental to my well-being but also hindered the growth of our relationship. I found myself always driving, and we were taking the route I thought best. After applying what I have learnt, I find SO MUCH pleasure in exploring alternative routes and actually sitting in the passenger seat, at times. For me, letting go of the instinctual powerful feeling of having to be right, allowed me the pleasure of experiencing the joy when my husband became my hero. I no longer feel exhausted and resentful but cherished and loved. Where I put my energy is my choice. I own that responsibility more now than ever before in my life.
Embracing change and relinquishing control can open doors to unexpected joys and a deeper, more fulfilling partnership.
How is it serving you to hold the view you are superior to your Husband? What would it be like to feel cherished, and taken care of, and confident that your husband has everything under control? What would it be like to have that kind of harmony in your relationship?
